Nobel Laureate Leads Sustainable Development Workshop

     Over 150 students of the Faculty of Economics and Digital Economy at the Tashkent State University of Economics (TSUE) were treated to an insightful and inspiring workshop led by Nobel Prize-winning economist and Honorary Professor of TSUE. The distinguished professor shared his expertise on the topic, “How to Measure Sustainable Development?” with undergraduate students eager to learn from his wealth of knowledge.

   During the lecture, Professor Chung delved into the intricacies of assessing and comparing the sustainable development levels of countries using various indicators and metrics. He emphasized the importance of understanding the connections between economic, social, and environmental aspects of development to ensure long-term prosperity and well-being.

     In particular, Professor Chung highlighted the critical role of the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index in evaluating a country’s progress. He presented data from the World Bank and United Nations, illustrating global trends and the progress made by Uzbekistan in recent years. For instance, Uzbekistan’s HDI value increased from 0.655 in 2010 to 0.718 in 2019, reflecting consistent improvement in key areas such as education, income, and life expectancy.

     Furthermore, the esteemed professor shared real-world examples and case studies, shedding light on the scientific and methodological approaches required to tackle current and future challenges facing Uzbekistan in its pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

     The interactive workshop encouraged students to actively participate, fostering an atmosphere of dynamic discussion and exchange of ideas. Professor Chung’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of economists and policy-makers was evident, as he patiently addressed students’ questions and provided valuable guidance and advice.
